So let’s take a step back for a minute. With all of this talk of abstract “devices”, which devices, exactly, are people likely to demand compatibility with?
Might any of them have an Apple logo?
Not to mention that if they do a “cloud-based” authentication scheme, this means two things:
1. Each of the devices must have networking hardware, and be able to connect to the internet. How does this work for portable DVD players?
2. What happens if the content publisher disappears, and the authentication servers go away? I would assume that you will no longer be able to watch that movie. This has happened before with windows media authentication.
